Employee Spotlight: Meet Michael Roberts

Welcome to our second installment of employee spotlight! Today you’ll get to meet one of our account executives, Michael Roberts. He works out of our Dallas, Texas office.

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Fine Designs.

I have been working at Fine Designs for the Dallas office for almost four years now. I am an account executive, which entails reaching out to event directors and helping them with their event apparel fundraising. My job is made of many calls, emails, proposals and the occasional in person meeting. It feels good knowing that I am helping our company grow while also helping clubs, gyms and association impact the life of kids through sports. Since I have been with our company, I have personally facilitated and overseen almost 400 events for close to 2.3 million dollars worth of apparel sales, which resulted in more that $600,000 of funds raised for our clients.

I heard you grew up in Italy and your parents were missionaries there. What was that like?

Growing up in Italy was awesome! We were never the most wealthy family, and my parents were always on the go, but we all fit in really well with the culture. I think that it has helped me to fit in better at Fine Designs as well, as a lot of the company is comprised of TCKs (Third Culture Kids) just like me. Another plus was growing up speaking Italian and English. I later learned French at school and I can get by in Spanish. Lately I have been picking up some Russian too! 🙂

You have one little boy (very cute by the way) with another one on the way. How do you balance your career with your family?

Probably the best aspect of working at Fine Designs is the flexibility that the job brings along with the family oriented culture that stems from the top. The Noviks and many other owners put their families first while also working extremely hard at their jobs. Also, I work from home two days a week and we try to take walks on a weekly basis. It’s very important to find moments where you can be “unplugged” from technology and present to the ones you love.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

A young Al Pacino or a young Tom Cruise! Or I might just play myself since I wanted to be an actor when I was younger.

Before working at Fine Designs, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

My most unusual job, besides working for Fine Designs, must have been when I was working part-time on the weekends as a superhero a little kids parties. I already had a good full-time job, but I got roped in to dressing up as Spiderman, Batman and Prince Charming for parties. I would perform magic tricks, lead group games, and sweat a lot, especially when I was dressed up as Batman.

Michael, Where do you see the company in 5 years?

We are already leading our industry and improving our service on a daily basis. So in five years, I see us being able to give back even more to the organizations we work with and provide greater quality and variety for the people that buy apparel from us at events. As one of the greatest philosophers of our time once said, “To infinity and beyond”!
